- For an accurate explanation
for WHY there are TIDES, with a special focus on
FUNDY TIDES, I highly recommend reading this
excellent article
on
Fundy
Tides by Roy Bishop
-
- About
Sherm's tide charts
- Sherm's tide charts graph an entire month of
tide data for the
Minas Basin
at
Horton Bluff [
sample
] and for the upper end
of
the Bay of Fundy
at Halls
Harbour. [

Each sheet
contains 2 graphs: Upper graph gives
predicted tide
TIME,
Lower graph gives a prediction for
RANGE
from low to high water and
DEPTH
of water above a datum
point.
Astronomical
data which
directly influence the tide are also shown.
Click
here for the General
Guide
that demonstrates how the
Tide Data is presented on each graph
of Sherm's chart i.e. How to
read the charts, also, some brief background
information on the local tides.
The NOAA link, TIDES,
provides more extensive information and background on
the general topic of tides and tide prediction.
Predictions for many
locations in addition to the locations listed in
the left column on this page, are accessable
from a large database provided by Dean Pentcheff's
website at WWW
Tide and Current Predictor. The predictions are
generated at the site using David
Flater's XTide program. The same program is
a source of data used to produce Sherm's tide
graphs.
I have linked representative places around the
Nova Scotia coastline. The default setting at
the selected site gives tide data for the current
date and the day following. In addition, time of
sunrise and sunset is given. Other formats can be
obtained by changingthe settings via the interactive
setup at the site.
"Other Locations" in the opposite column,
gives a data list of hundreds of sites that may
contain the specific place you are looking for.
A
Warning:
My charts and the predictions from XTide
are not intended to be used
where serious navigation information and skills are
required. They are meant to be used as a
handy guide for recreational pursuits near tidal
waters, e.g. bird watching, shoreline hiking and
observing. Note also,
weather is an unpredictable factor that can
have very significent influences on tide time and
height.
The Canadian
Hydrographic Service, a Canadian
government agency, provides tide times and height
predictions for various Canadian coastal locations. It
provides a list covering one week at a time, in 3
different formats. It takes a little longer to load
than the XTide links but the site is quite easy to use
and is interactive.
