WordStar 7 Printer Drivers

Fortunately for WordStar 7d users (and for users of WS 5 to 6 as well since they can use the same files), production of WS PDFs (Printer Driver Files) ended about the same time as development of resident font language for DOS. Therefore if a printer has resident fonts (not always guaranteed in this GUI world), there is likely a driver in existence.

Hewlett Packett Laser

For HP printers, HPCL5e printer drivers were included in an WS7 extra database set. The HP4Si.PDF included in that database can be customized using PDFEdit for most HPCL5e Laser Printers. Since an office printer I used was a LaserJet 5L, I modified a HP4Si.PDF for that printer. The same PDF can be used for HP LaserJets 6L, 1100, and 1100a. I am not certain if the Line Printer font is on the last three printers, but all the other fonts in the HP LaserJet 5L are there.

A WS7 extra database was also released for HP Deskjets . Because of the frequency of requests for driver for HP Deskjets, I have collected both WordStar 6 and WordStar 7 drivers. Also available is an earlier Deskjet colour driver for the HP Deskjet 310 .

HP's new FontSmart technology combines PCL and Postscript fonts sets in both PCL and PS modes. I have created a beta PS driver for printers with this font engine which can be used for direct printing to hardware or creation of PS files for use with a Postscript Interpreter. The Postscript driver has been hacked so it can access all characters in a font.

With the advent of the Euro, HP added support for it in their recent printers. I have customized the last HP Deskjet and LaserJet drivers to use the Euro.

Epson Stylus Color

A WS7 extra database was created for the Stylus series that can be used with this printer series. On my Epson Stylus Color 200, I have four preferred PDFs depending upon whether I am printing in Black and White or color.

Brother Laser

The last extra databases were for the HL6, one for WS7c and one for WS7d .

Canon

There is an extra database which works with the Canon BJ 200 series.

For the IR400 I have created a custom Postscript driver for many of the fonts resident in the printer. Included in the Zip are versions for duplex printing and creating booklets.

Lexmark

The Lexmark 250dn used the HP font engine and the following driver accesses 60 PS fonts in the printer.

Postscript

One way of dealing with the lack of resident fonts in printers is to use a Postscript Printer driver to print to file. That file can then be turned into an Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) which can be printed with Adobe Acrobat Reader. In addition to the Basic 35 Postscript fonts, other Postscript/Adobe Type 1 fonts can be used. To create the Adobe Acrobat PDF, Acrobat Distiller or a similar program such as AFDL Ghostscript is needed.

The best Postscript printer driver for creating Acrobat PDF files was a modification of the IBM4039 Postscript Laserprinter by Roger Allen. He modified the driver and its Prologue file so that the endash, emdash, curly left quote and curly left and right quotes were printed. I have further modifed the driver to support the Euro, coloured Inset graphics, comments (PDFMark), different page sizes, and to use Type 1 fonts which came with Adobe Type Manager (see below).

Using Acrobat Reader to Print a WordStar File

A number of Postscript printer drivers are included with WS DOS. On this site I have posted a ZIP file which contains versions of the HP4SiMX.PDF and the Generic Postscript 2 PDF customized for use for the Type 1 fonts which came Adobe Type Manager. I have also added the free Euro fonts to it.

My copies of Adobe Type 1 fonts came with Lotus AmiPro 3.1 (ATM 2.5), Lotus AmiPro 3.0 for OS/2 (ATM 2.5), and my Epson Stylus Color 200 printer (ATM 3.02). Following are the included fonts with each of the distributions:
