The North Mountain Old Forest Society
Scenes of Old-Forest Restoration in Nova Scotia, CANADA
planting old-forest seedlings

Right: participants of the restoration project
planted tree seedlings in the small gaps created by harvesting with horses.
Seedlings of red spruce (left), white pine, eastern hemlock, sugar
maple, yellow birch, white ash, and red oak were planted. These species are more tolerant to
shaded conditions and are more natural to the old Acadian forests.

Woodlot owners Peter Gale and
his daughter Emily at Baxters Harbour (right) are planting a diversity
of shade tolerant species to help bring back these Acadian forest characteristics.

With the help of many participants, including neighbours
on the North Mountain like Johanne Perrault and her daughter Tara (left), we have been
able to plant over 10,000 tree seedlings since 2001.
