DOG ADOPTION AT KINGS COUNTY ANIMAL
CONTROL
As animal control by-law enforcement officers, we are constantly in the position of deciding
the fate of abandoned dogs. Over one hundred dogs typically pass through our
pound each year. Of these dogs, about half are strays that get reclaimed by
their owners. Of the remaining dogs, about one-third are destroyed, while the other two-thirds are
fortunate enough to be adopted.
Many of
the dogs that come to our kennel are perfectly capable of being loving and
faithful pets. We are always trying to link these dogs who desperately need new homes to people who genuinely want
to care for them. Through increasing awareness about the option of adopting a
pound dog, we hope to end the needless destruction of unwanted dogs that come
into our kennels.
You
should consider the following when thinking of adopting an
animal. What breed is most suited
for your family? What size is ideal? What activities would you enjoy with your
pet (i.e. walking, running)? Do you have the commitment required to take on a
new addition to your family?
The adoption
procedure is easy. We offer a trial period of ten days to see if there are any
problems of incompatibility. If the animal is not suitable she/he can be
returned to the pound within the trial period. There is an adoption fee of
$35.00 (non-refundable) which is paid upon dog adoption. The new owner is
responsible for vaccinating and neuter/spaying their new pet (if the dog isn't
already) . Dogs adopted from our kennels are eligible
for the discounted spay/neuter programs offered by various humane societies -
their names and phone numbers are under Spaying/Neutering Your New
Pet. New owners should also
realize that few dogs are "perfect" or mind-readers. Rather than giving up on an animal
because there is a behaviour aspect that you do not like, it is a pet owner's
responsibility to put the effort into effectively socializing, supervising, and
training their pet.
